EchoHam / Connection help for complete noob
« Last post by sroque on June 29, 2016, 02:13:29 AM »
I'm not currently an amateur radio operator but I am trying to help someone else. He is in the UK and I am in the US.Perhaps you can give us some ideas. I think he was able to verify his call sign but has ben unable to make a connection yet (even to echo test). Here is what I know so far:

1. He is using a Mac running El Capitan (OS X 10.11.5).
2, His ISP is Virgin Media running a Super Hub 2. It does not appear from what I read online that this ISP supports a static IP address on its residential internet accounts.
3. I sent him directions for setting up port forwarding on the Super Hub 2 but I am not sure he has been successful. The Virgin Media rep that he spoke to about this was less than helpful.
4. Since the ISP does not seem to support fixed IP addresses could I achieve the same result by switching his Mac settings from DHCP to DHCP with manual address? Assuming that I set a valid number would that also work?

BTW thanks for producing this program. I have been considering getting a license for a long time and the cost of good gear has been a sticking point. Running this on my computer looks like a good alternative.

Serial Tools / Suggestion: new cr/lf option
« Last post by joevt on June 17, 2016, 09:20:11 PM »
Iíve been using Serial Tools to do some kernel debugging. It works well, but thereís one feature I would like added. Currently in the Terminal view, I see some lines are double spaced, and some lines are not. This is because different routines are being used in the kernel to output lines to the serial port. One of them does only lf or cr, and the other does crlf. I would like an additional cr/lf option that treats all those combinations as cr/lf (maybe change the existing cr/lf checkbox to a popup menu to select one of the three options). It would work like this:

Code: [Select]
previousInputCharacter = '\0';

while (GetInputCharacter(&inputCharacter)) {
if (inputCharacter == cr) {
else if (inputCharacter == lf) {
if (previousInputCharacter == cr) {
// ignore lf when it is preceded by cr because we already handled that
else {
else {
previousInputCharacter = inputCharacter;

This should correctly handle input that uses lf, cr, or crlf.

Another thing missing is flow control options. (xon/xoff, rts/cts, dtr/dsr)

Other than the search that people have been asking for, here are my feature requests.

1) Ability to select audio input/output for communication other than system audio settings.

2) uPnP / NAT-PMP support to auto-configure router passthroughs of echo link ports.

3) Echolink Proxy support.

Thank you for the reply.

EchoHam does not differentiate between repeaters, links and stations.
The communication is established to the partner IP address and at that level EchoHam is not even aware of what type of station it is.

If the other station is a mobile device (e.g. iPhone, Samsung, etc) you can not establish communication due to limitations in mobile phone networks which put these devices on a private IP address. However, that is not a limitation of EchoHam but of the network infrastructure.

If you can establish a connection to the echolink test server and your transmission is echoed back to you then you can be confident that your end is working OK.

I am trying to run Echoham on my Macbook Pro,
I can connect to the majority of the repeaters
listed, and most of the links but can not connect to
individual stations.

I have tried several different router configurations
with no success.

Is there any possibility of adding  a search function? It's hard to look thru a large list of call signs.  Not as important but a place to save a favorite would be nice.  Lastly if I am not too needed  a volume control, just for the app, so I don't have to change the system setting.  Thanks either way!

OK, thanks for the insight.  I watched a couple of the YouTube videos, and I went into the admin screen for my router.  I found the port forwarding tab, but I didn't edit anything yet.  Additionally, I have a modem that is separate from my router.  The video I watched said that I might have to port forward in the modem as well as the router.  I also have the problem of watching these tutorials that are showing screen shots on Windows machines.  I then have to look at somewhat different views on my Mac so I can't follow cookbook style instructions.  I actually have to think about what I'm doing.  I will get there eventually, perhaps with a little help from my "hams running Macs" friends.  Once again, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
